The Algerian War, or Algerian War of Independence, took place from 1954 to 1962 and falls within the broader framework of the wars of decolonization after World War II, and during the Cold War. The professional army as well as the conscripts of the contingent took part in this event, for the military, it was about military operations and for the conscripts of the contingent, officially maintaining order in Algeria. A conscript of the contingent, during the Algerian war, was someone doing his compulsory military service, under the French flag, and sent to Algeria to maintain order, in the form of a contingent, being attached to an army infantry regiment for logistics; cantonment, supply, etc.

Gabriel FAUCARD was one of those conscripts sent to Algeria, part of the 60 1B contingent attached to the 404th infantry regiment, based in the Mitidja plain a few kilometers from Blida. He was decorated on March 10, 1962 with the citation in the order of the regiment with the combatant's cross.
